And yet sometimes it fails at something that appears trivial — a simple children’s riddle. Not because it is “stupid,” but because it thinks in a way that is fundamentally different from the human mind.

When a person receives a question, they instinctively search for meaning.
When an AI receives a question, it searches for structure, rules and patterns.

This difference is rarely noticed in everyday use, yet it lies precisely behind those moments when a machine’s answer sounds strange, illogical or even absurd. In such situations the problem is not the artificial intelligence itself. It lies in the way we communicate with it.

AI does not “understand what we mean” — it interprets what we have formulated. Literally, sequentially, and without the human ability to fill in gaps in meaning.

If we want to receive truly useful answers, we must accept a simple but decisive truth: communication with AI is not a conversation between people. It is an interaction with a system that follows its own logic. And the better we understand that logic, the more powerful a tool artificial intelligence becomes.

How Artificial Intelligence Works

Artificial intelligence is often described with human words — that it “understands,” “thinks,” “decides,” or “judges.” This linguistic convenience is natural, but it creates a fundamentally misleading perception.

The real mechanism behind modern language models does not have a psychological nature — it is mathematical and statistical. These models do not possess consciousness, intentions or an internal sense of meaning. They operate through probabilistic prediction: they calculate which sequence of symbols (words, phrases, structures) is most likely to follow the previous one.

For this reason it is more accurate to speak about probabilistic interpretation rather than “understanding” in the human sense of the word.

The key difference between humans and artificial intelligence appears in the way meaning is processed. Human thinking is naturally contextual — when a person hears a question, they almost automatically include the situation, the intention, hidden assumptions and even the emotional tone of the statement. Meaning is not perceived only through the words, but through the entire communicative picture.

A language model operates according to a different principle. It analyzes the structure of the text — the words, their sequence and the statistical relationships between them. In this process the human mechanism for intuitively “completing” the reality behind a statement is absent.

This characteristic can be described as structural literalism.

Structural literalism is the tendency of artificial intelligence to interpret information according to its formal linguistic structure rather than according to the implied human context. The model does not make assumptions about intention, does not reconstruct the situation behind the words and does not correct semantic ambiguities intuitively. It follows what is explicitly formulated.

In human communication a significant part of meaning is built outside the text itself — through intonation, facial expressions, gestures, pauses, eye contact, reactions, tempo of speech and many other nonverbal signals. The human brain processes this layer continuously and almost invisibly.

A language model has no access to it unless it is explicitly described.

This is where the apparent paradox arises. In situations that seem “obvious” to a human, AI may produce an answer that sounds strange or unexpected. Not because it lacks information, but because it operates within a different logical framework.

Where humans rely on context, the model relies on structure.

Understanding this difference is essential. It shows that effective communication with artificial intelligence is not merely a matter of asking questions but of clearly defining the semantic framework within which the model should operate.

Where Misalignments Occur

In everyday use artificial intelligence often creates an impression of stability and logic. Its answers sound coherent, structured and in many cases completely convincing. That is precisely what makes moments of misalignment so interesting — when the AI’s reaction appears unexpected, strange or even absurd.

These situations usually arise not in complex technical tasks but in questions that appear intuitive to humans.

The reason lies in the different mechanisms of interpretation. Humans process meaning through context, life experience and implicit assumptions. Artificial intelligence processes the structure of the information provided. It struggles with literal interpretation and often cannot grasp idioms, metaphors and frequently used expressions, which sometimes leads to humorous or incorrect interpretations.

When a formulation contains ambiguity, a hidden assumption or a logical inconsistency, a human almost automatically performs a correction. The brain filters out illogical possibilities, selects the most plausible meaning and continues without sensing contradiction.

For a language model this corrective mechanism does not exist in human form. As a result AI may give an answer that is perfectly consistent with the formal structure of the question but at the same time sounds unnatural to human intuition.

This is precisely where structural literalism becomes visible — the model follows the logic of the statement rather than the logic of the situation implied by the human speaker.

These mismatches are not classical errors. They are a natural consequence of the interaction between human communication and a mathematical model. The more unclear the framework of a question, the greater the probability of such an effect.

The best way to understand this dynamic is through concrete examples — especially those cases where a human sees the solution almost instantly while artificial intelligence moves in a completely different direction.

Examples That Seem Elementary

The most interesting differences between the way humans perceive language and the way artificial intelligence processes it often appear in situations that sound entirely natural.

For example:

“If today the temperature is 0 degrees Celsius and yesterday it was twice as warm, what was the temperature yesterday?”

A typical reaction from artificial intelligence is to interpret the question as a mathematical proportion. Within such a framework the model might produce an answer such as:

“273.15 degrees Celsius.”

A formally consistent result obtained by converting to the absolute temperature scale — logically valid within one system of rules and at the same time obviously absurd in everyday context.

A similar effect can be observed in a question of a different type:

“If all prison sentences are reduced by half, what happens to a life sentence?”

A language model may follow the formal structure of the operation and generate an answer such as:

“A life sentence will be reduced to a fixed-term sentence.”

An answer that sounds procedurally logical but ignores the fact that the concept itself cannot be divided quantitatively.

Even more illustrative are situations where the problem lies not in logic but in language itself:

“If today is Thursday and I say:
‘I will see you next Friday,’
how many days from now will we meet?”

Without additional framing artificial intelligence will typically answer:

“After one day.”

The reason lies in the formulation itself. The expression “next Friday” is structurally ambiguous and does not provide a precise frame.

Here an important detail appears that often remains outside the public conversation about artificial intelligence. Some of these questions belong to the group of so-called classical logical traps — constructions that for years have been used in educational materials, demonstrations and cognitive testing.

In early generations of language models such formulations indeed produced answers that sounded paradoxical or excessively literal.

Today the situation is different. Modern AI systems are not trained solely on standard questions and ordinary text. Their models are trained on vast datasets containing contradictory statements, ambiguous linguistic constructions, misleading formulations, conversational expressions and real human dialogues.

During development their responses are calibrated through continuous feedback cycles designed precisely to reduce the effect of excessive literalism.

As a result the latest generations of language models increasingly avoid those apparently absurd reactions that once seemed characteristic of the technology. This does not mean that mismatches disappear; rather they move into far more subtle zones.

While classical logical traps gradually lose their diagnostic value, real challenges arise where the framework of a question is unclear, the context is mixed or language itself allows more than one interpretation.

It is precisely here that structural literalism becomes most visible.

What a Prompt Actually Is

In everyday Bulgarian there is a word that can replace almost anything — and in a huge number of situations people still understand each other perfectly.

“This is kind of… that thing.”
“I want to do the thing.”

And paradoxically, people often understand each other perfectly well. Not because the word itself is precise, but because human communication operates on several layers simultaneously: context, situation, intonation, nonverbal signals and shared experience. The brain fills in the missing meaning almost automatically.

Artificial intelligence does not work this way.

It has no access to those layers unless we explicitly provide them. And this is where the key to high-quality answers appears: the prompt.

A prompt (from the English word prompt) is the text we provide to the model as input. In practice it is the instruction describing what we want to receive.

In everyday use many people call it simply a “question,” but that is incomplete. A prompt can indeed be a question, but it can also be a task, a role, a format, constraints or quality criteria — everything that defines the framework of the response.

If conversation between humans allows us to say “that thing” and rely on context, in interaction with AI “that thing” becomes an empty space.

The model cannot “figure out” what we mean. It does not guess intentions — it interprets input. And if the input is unclear, the model does not stop; it selects one of the possible interpretations and continues confidently.

That is why a prompt is less a “question” and more a form of navigation.

We can imagine it as a coordinate system: it does not only state what we want but also the logical framework in which the answer should be constructed.

When the framework is missing, the system may still be consistent — but in the wrong direction.

One of the most useful ways to see this is through the difference between an empty prompt and a framed prompt.

“Write something about cybersecurity.”

This formulation leaves enormous room for interpretation. What exactly: a definition, analysis, advice or news? For whom: experts or a general audience? In what length? In what tone?

Now compare this with:

“Explain what cybersecurity is in 6–7 sentences, using language suitable for a general audience, without technical jargon. Give three examples from everyday life.”

Now the model is no longer guessing. It is executing an instruction.

A prompt does not merely clarify. It focuses.

Just as a camera lens does not change the world but changes how clearly we see it, a prompt does not change the model — it changes the way the model structures its answer.

Here is another example.

If you write:

“Make me a plan.”

A plan for what? For a day? A business? Training? Incident response?

But if you write:

“Create a response plan for a cybersecurity incident in a small organization. Include the first critical steps, communication, damage containment and follow-up actions.”

Now the prompt is no longer merely a question but a clearly formulated task.

In this sense a good prompt is not a matter of formality but of discipline of thought.

It translates intention into structure: what I want, for whom, in what format, for what purpose and under what constraints.

And the more precise this translation becomes, the less space remains for structural literalism, ambiguity and “confident mistakes.”

The paradox is simple and very practical: to receive more intelligent answers from artificial intelligence, we must create more intelligent prompts.

The Most Common Mistakes When Working with AI

One of the most widespread illusions surrounding artificial intelligence is that communicating with it resembles a conversation between people. We ask a question, receive an answer and instinctively assume that the system “understands” the situation in the same way a human would.

This is exactly where the most common mistakes appear.

The first is almost invisible because it sounds completely natural:

the vague prompt

“What do you think about this?”
“Is this normal?”
“Tell me what I should do.”

Such formulations work perfectly in human conversation. In interaction with a model, however, they shift a huge part of the cognitive work onto the system. The model must choose the context, the framework, the level of detail and even the type of answer.

The result often sounds convincing, but it does not always correspond to what the user actually expected.

The second mistake is even more interesting:

excessive trust in a confident tone

Language models are designed to generate fluent, logically sounding text. When an answer is well structured, the human brain automatically associates clarity of expression with accuracy of content.

But a confident tone is not a guarantee of correct interpretation.

A model may be consistent, reasoned and stylistically flawless — and at the same time follow a framework that is different from the one the user had in mind.

The third mistake arises from a very human habit:

asking questions with unstated context

People rarely formulate everything literally. Part of the meaning remains “between the lines.” This is natural in human communication. With AI, however, these gaps create the greatest mismatches.

“Is this a good idea?”
“Is this risky?”
“What would you do?”

A good idea for whom?
Risky under what conditions?
In what scenario?

The model does not see the situation.
It sees the text.

The fourth mistake is almost psychological:

the expectation of magical intelligence

Artificial intelligence is often perceived as a system that “should just know.” When the answer does not match the internal expectation of the user, the reaction is often disappointment or skepticism.

In reality the model has simply followed the structure it was given.

This is not a defect of the technology.
It is a characteristic of the way it works.

And perhaps the most important mistake — the one that connects all the others:

confusing logical interpretation with human interpretation

When a person asks a question, they usually think within a life-based framework. When a model processes input, it works with statistical and structural relationships.

The two systems may appear similar — but they are not identical.

Mismatches do not arise because the machine is “stupid” or the human is “unclear.” They arise because communication takes place between two different mechanisms for processing meaning.

And this leads to the real practical conclusion.

Working effectively with artificial intelligence does not require technical expertise. It requires clarity of formulation, awareness of framing and a critical attitude toward the answer.

In other words — the same skills that lie at the foundation of all good communication.

AI as a Tool, Not an Oracle

In the public imagination new technologies often pass through a similar cycle. First comes enthusiasm, then fear, and between them a peculiar form of mythologization.

Artificial intelligence is no exception.

For some it appears as an almost magical system that “knows everything.”
For others it seems like an unreliable machine that “fails in simple situations.”

In both cases the perception moves toward extremes that miss the most important point.

AI is neither an all-knowing mind nor a defective conversational partner.

It is a tool.

And a tool of a new kind — capable of processing, structuring and generating information at a scale and speed that have no historical analogue.

But like any tool, its effectiveness depends on how it is used.

A hammer is not “bad” if we strike incorrectly.
Navigation software is not “stupid” if we enter the wrong destination.

Similarly, artificial intelligence cannot bear responsibility for an unclear framework, an ambiguous question or a misinterpretation of the result.

The most productive approach lies neither in blind trust nor automatic skepticism. It lies in a far more rational space — where AI is understood as an amplifier of human thinking rather than a replacement for it.

The model does not eliminate critical thinking.
It makes it even more necessary.

And perhaps here lies the most important change that artificial intelligence introduces into everyday work with information.

It does not simply provide answers.

It provokes better questions, clearer formulation, more precise framing and more conscious communication.

In this sense interaction with AI is not a test of the machine’s intelligence. More and more often it becomes a mirror of our own cognitive structure.

Because technology may be extremely powerful, but the quality of the result still depends on one old and almost banal factor:

the clarity of human thought.

         ← Back to Publications

How to Communicate with AI so it Understands Us The difference between human perception and the logic of machine interpretation Artificial intelligence already writes articles, analyzes markets, generates code and answers questions at a speed that until recently sounded like science fiction.
